About Maryland NECA
Before there was a Maryland Chapter, NECA, there was an Institute of Electrical Contractors of Maryland. Founded in 1917, the Institute was the forerunner of today's Association.
On June 8, 1950, the organization officially became the Maryland Chapter, NECA. Today, the Maryland Chapter provides a wide variety of member services. These services are a prime example of the value of NECA membership for our contractors.
Labor Relations
Perhaps the Chapter's most important, and visible, function is in the area of labor relations. Maintaining a harmonious working relationship with the IBEW has always been one of the Chapter's key goals. Regular meetings of the local Labor-Management Committees provide a forum to discuss issues before they become problems. When problems do arise, the step-by-step grievance procedure spelled out in our collective bargaining agreements insures a fair hearing for all parties, without the need for strikes, lockouts, or other job actions.
Labor agreements are negotiated with the goal of providing fair compensation to employees while allowing the contractors to be competitive in our markets.
Recently, local Labor Management Cooperation Committees were formed in both the Baltimore and Western Maryland Divisions. These Committees will provide a vehicle to allow the organized electrical construction industry to deliver its message of quality performance done on time and on budget to the construction industry decision makers, as well as enhancing the partnership between NECA and the IBEW.
Education
The electrical contracting industry is constantly changing. Today more than ever, contractors need continuing education to keep abreast of this dynamic industry. The Maryland Chapter provides access to all of the various NECA educational materials for our members. In addition, the Chapter also presents seminars in subjects such as estimating, effective supervision, succession planning, and other topics of interest to the industry.
Monthly Newsletter
MD NECA News, the Chapter newsletter, is normally published monthly. MD NECA News presents timely information on Chapter activities, a calendar of events, and other information of use to NECA members. This service is provided free of charge to all Maryland Chapter members.
Monthly Membership Meetings
Monthly membership meetings are normally held on the fourth Tuesday of each month. These meetings are an opportunity for the members to receive updates on various Chapter activities. Occasionally, guest speakers are bought in to speak on subjects of relevance to the Industry. Monthly membership meetings also provide a forum for members to bring up issues of concern, offer suggestions, or ask any questions they may have. Finally, these meetings are also an opportunity to network and socialize with fellow members.
Western Maryland Division meetings are held upon the call of the Division Chairman.
A special Eastern Shore meeting is held every summer, and our Christmas Luncheon is held annually in December.
